Have You Tried the Viral 6 to 1 Grocery Shopping Method ?

When I heard about this grocery shopping method that can be used to save you money,  I had to give it a try as soon as possible. The viral 6 to 1 grocery shopping method was created by a chef. In his video he explains what each of the numbers represent.  I was really interested by the video because I am always looking for new ways to save money because grocery shopping is so expensive now. It can easily become one of your biggest household expenses.

My goal is to spend no more $150 a week on groceries and eating out.  Some of the other benefits of the 6 to 1 grocery shopping method are it helps you to save time and decreases wasting food. I was so excited about trying this that I tried it on my next grocery shopping day.

What does each number in the 6 to 1 method represent?

  • 6 vegetables
  • 5 fruits
  • 4 proteins
  • 3 starches
  • 2 sources of spreads
  • 1 something fun to eat that you like

What I Purchased using this method?

  • 6 vegetables zucchini, green beans, peas, onion, multicolored carrots
  • 5 fruit – apples, oranges, strawberries, blueberries and lemons
  • 4 proteins – chicken breast, chicken wings, turkey meat, chicken sausage (already in my freezer)
  • 3 starches– high protein noodles, whole wheat bread, and quiona
  • 2 sources of spreads – taco sauce and chicken sauce
  • 1 something fun to eat that you like – the smallest bag of cookies 🙂

This is a really great if you trying to make sure that you are consuming enough of vegetables and fruits in your diet. It also assists with cutting down on the amount of processed food that you are eating now. Your focus is on whole foods. If you don’t already eat like this, it may take some time for you to get used to it and require you to find some new recipes.  I have been eating mostly whole foods for a while, so it wasn’t a change for me. Usually when I go to the grocery store, I shop mainly on the outer area of the store. (produce/meat/yogurt/bread)

My Final Review

I liked this shopping method because it inspired me to eat different types of vegetables and fruits because I usually purchase the same ones every week.

I started going back to the farmer’s market looking for different vegetables and more recipes online.

I did continue to purchase some items that were not in any of these categories like yogurt for breakfast, granola for my yogurt, and honey.

I still had to go to multiple grocery stores and not just one because of the prices and items that were on sale.

I had to purchase some frozen vegetables because they were on sale and they would last longer.

Overall, it didn’t save me much time because I already shop this way – mainly whole food items in the cart and I have meat and frozen vegetables already in my freezer. The best part of for me was buying more different types of vegetables and fruits every week. I can really see this making a big difference for someone when they are shopping and why it helps you to eat healthier, save money and time and waste less food.
